Township of Puslinch

Puslinch is a township within Wellington County, surrounding the south end of Guelph.  The main thoroughfares in the area are Highway 401 and Highway 6.  It is centrally located between Hamilton and Guelph.  Highway 6 runs through the middle of Puslinch and used to be the main artery leading from Hamilton to Guelph.  Although there are other routes it continues to serve as a gateway between these two cities.  The township was not always recognized by the name we know today, throughout history, Puslinch was identified as Puselynch, Posselinch and Puzzlewitch!

Natural heritage features played a role in the settlement of First Nations people who lived in the area and later with the European settlers.  A large majority of early settlers in the township were Highland Scottish although other groups included German, English and Irish.

The first buildings in Puslinch were constructed of logs but as the farmsteads filled in, the settlers built grist mills and sawmills which began the second stage of architecture of frame structures.  One of the most recognized of the old mills is the Aberfoyle Mill.

It was constructed in 1859 by a Scottish immigrant named George McLean.  It originally operated as a grist mill, powered by the pond situated at the back of the building.  In 1867, the Mill won a gold medal for its oatmeal at the World's Fair in Paris.  The Mill functioned until the late 1920's.  In 1960 the Mill was purchased by the Owens family and after 6 years of restoration, it was converted into one of the most unique restaurants in Canada.  The main dining area of the mill today is made up of decor of authentic antiques, one of the countries largest personal collections of Canadiana.
