Centre Wellington

Centre Wellington is located in the heart of Wellington County.  The residents of Centre Wellington can enjoy the benefits of small town living, rural life, the Grand River as well as close proximity to many urban centres.
Two of the largest towns within Centre Wellington are Fergus and Elora.

Fergus is the largest community in Centre Wellington, a township within Wellington County.  It lies on the banks of the Grand River about 18 kilometres north of Guelph.  Fergus is surrounded by many natural settings such as Elora Gorge & Conservation Area and Belwood Lake.

Fergus began as a Scottish settlement in 1833 and still maintains many of is Scottish roots today.  It is a heavily agricultural community but is also home to manufacturing, retail, health care, trades people and some tourism.  Fergus has its own Hospital, Groves Memorial Community Hospital, founded by Dr. Abraham Groves who was a pioneer of many forms of healthcare in Fergus.

Fergus Attractions

Fergus is best known for the annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games, which represents the largest gathering of clans in the world outside Scotland and Cape Breton Island.

Fergus is also home to the Fergus Highland Rugby Football Club and the Fergus Curling Club and the Fergus Force Junior A Hockey Club.  The Fergus Grand Theatre is located on St. Andrew Street and hosts live entertainment and stage plays.  Just across the river is the Fergus Market, a restored historic warehouse for shopping.

The Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex is located on Belsyde Ave East and includes a 25 metre indoor swimming pool, 2 ice rinks, tennis courts, day camps and more.

Elora was officially founded in 1832 by Captain William Gilkinson, originally from Scotland.  He purchased 14,000 acres of land on the Grand River and settled on the east side of the River.  By 1833 he had opened a sawmill and general store.

The village continued to grow and was a major agricultural marketplace in the 1850's and 1860's.  The flour mill and saw mill were powered by the Grand River and stores in the downtown area sold many types of goods.  Throughout the years Eloras economy continued to grow based heavily in the agriculture industry however throughout the last 20-30 years the town has benefited greatly through tourism.
